How to clean a mattress safely at home

Mattress filling can retain moisture. First check whether the manufacturer permits wet cleaning of the cover or the entire mattress.

Check cover and filling

Wash a removable cover only as instructed. Permission to wash the cover does not mean that the filling can get wet. If wet cleaning is prohibited or unclear, dry-vacuum and ask for advice.

Remove bedding and inspect seams and stains. Home cleaning should not be described as sterilisation or guaranteed removal of all allergens.

Treat stains with little moisture

Blot fresh liquid. Use only a material-compatible product and test it in a hidden area. Avoid excess detergent and mixed household chemicals.

If extraction cleaning is permitted, use controlled solution and extract moisture promptly. Do not saturate deep filling or wet both sides without a reliable drying plan.

Dry before covering

Provide air circulation and allow complete drying before adding bedding or a protector. Surface washing may not solve suspected mould or structural damage.

For a service quote, send dimensions, material, care instructions and stain photos. Agree suitable treatment and price before work.
