How to clean a sofa at home

Start with the upholstery care label. Not every cover tolerates water, and no cleaning method can guarantee removal of every stain. Preparation and controlled moisture matter.

Check fabric and dry-vacuum

Follow the furniture instructions. Do not wet-clean a cover that permits dry cleaning only. Check separately whether removable covers may be washed.

Remove loose dirt with a normal dry vacuum. Test water and suitable solution in a hidden area and wait for the result. Stop if colour transfers or the surface changes.

Treat stains carefully

Blot fresh liquid with a clean absorbent cloth without rubbing it wider. Use a product suitable for the fabric and stain, following its dosage. Do not mix cleaners.

Old stains or stains fixed by earlier heat or unsuitable products may remain. Send a photo and material details if you need help deciding on treatment.

Extract, then dry

Work in small overlapping passes with an extraction-safe detergent. Avoid soaking padding; finish with suction passes without spraying more solution. A garment steamer does not extract dirty water and heat may damage some upholstery.

Provide ventilation and let the sofa dry fully before use. Drying depends on material, filling, moisture and room conditions. Request a service quote for delicate materials or a job you prefer not to do yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use washing-up liquid?

Use only products allowed by the furniture and equipment instructions. Unsuitable cleaners may leave residue, foam excessively or change fabric colour.

Will every stain disappear?

No guarantee is possible. Results depend on the fabric, stain composition, age and earlier treatments.
